5/31 Memorial Project

On May 31, 2026, we had the privilege of attending the dedication of the 5/31 Memorial in Virginia Beach. What stood out most wasn’t the beautiful stonework, the peaceful pathways, or the thoughtful design—it was the people.Hundreds came together to remember, reflect, and honor the lives forever changed on May 31, 2019. Family members, friends, coworkers, first responders, and community members quietly walked the memorial, taking in the sights and sounds around them and spending time with the memories of those they love. One of the most meaningful features of the memorial is the Hero Tree. Struck by lightning years ago, the tree healed and continues to stand tall today. Its resilience feels especially fitting in a place built to honor strength, remembrance, and hope.As we watched visitors read names, leave flowers, admire the painted remembrance stones, and gather beneath the trees, it was impossible not to be moved. There is something powerful about seeing a community come together in the face of tragedy—not just to remember, but to support one another. We are incredibly proud of our own Brian and Jimmy, along with the many talented subcontractors, craftsmen, and partners who poured so much care into creating this place of serenity and reflection. Their work helped transform a vision into a lasting tribute for the families, survivors, first responders, and all those affected. It was a beautiful day, a beautiful dedication, and a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, a community can come together with compassion, strength, and love.
